Dario Marianelli interviewed on ‘Sound of Cinema’ on BBC Radio 3

Matthew Sweet speaks with Dario about his musical influences and process in composing for the second time for Laika‘s hit animation ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’, which was released in the UK on Friday. The programme also features a huge selection of Dario’s music from previous award-winning films including ‘Atonement‘, ‘The Boxtrolls‘, ‘Jane Eyre‘, ‘The Brothers Grimm‘ and many more. Since it’s initial release in the US in mid August, the production has received stunning reviews.

“Kubo stands out for its complexity, seductively dark themes and the extraordinary beauty of its animation…Kubo’s quest, swept along by Dario Marianelli’s gorgeous, surging score, takes him through lands as exquisitely realised as anything in Zhang Yimou’s sumptuous martial arts fantasy Hero.” ★★★★★ The Guardian

“Animation to take the breath away” ★★★★ Evening Standard

“Visually sumptuous and meticulously crafted…Knight’s picture is destined to become an enduring family favourite” Evening Telegraph

“This animation is utterly ravishing throughout, the beautifully achieved stop-motion once again giving the narrative an endearingly handmade, lovingly crafted aesthetic…It’s matched by Dario Marianelli’s score, which traverses beautifully between tender and soulful to lively and adventurous.” The National

The film is available to watch in cinemas now.
