Composer, Musical Director
After working as a music director and orchestrator, Terry began his professional composing career at the National Theatre. He first worked there as co-orchestrator of the multi-award winning ‘Guys and Dolls’, which was followed by 12 years of National Theatre productions with leading actors and directors. He continues to work all over the country in various theatres. He is the conductor of the animated films ‘Room on a Broom’, ‘Stick Man’, ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ performed with live orchestra. He also regularly performs for silent films on the piano.
He has worked extensively as an on-set musical director and vocal coach, including on the feature films ‘My Week With Marilyn’ and ‘The Nutcracker in 3D’. Most recently, Terry worked as a music director on Stephen Frears’ feature film ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’, starring Meryl Streep. In the recording studio, Terry has conducted and orchestrated the music for 50 feature films, amongst these ‘Mr Turner’, ‘Jadoo, W.E.’, ‘The King’s Speech’, ‘Youth, ‘Another Year’, ‘The Illusionist’, ‘’Brideshead Revisited’, ‘Happy-Go-Lucky’ and ‘Brick Lane’.
Recently Terry has conducted a number of live performances of ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ around the UK and internationally. The first performances were at The Sage, Gateshead in December 2013 with the Northern Sinfonia and Terry has since conducted performances at the National Concert Hall, Dublin and the 2015 Krakow Film Festival. Terry returns to the National Concert Hall, Dublin in December 2016 to conduct performances of ‘Stick Man’ and ‘Room on a Broom’.
Terry has composed for a large number of Shakespeare productions at the RSC and Regent’s Park’s Open Air Theatre. He also wrote songs for the RSC’s production of Alice in Wonderland. He has written 2 musicals – The Birds, commissioned by the Istanbul City Theatre, which ran for 4 years, and Kes! The Musical for the Octagon Theatre, Bolton, and revived at York’s Theatre Royal.
Terry has been working with Matthew Bourne for nearly 15 years and is an associate artist of Matthew’s company New Adventures, writing six of Matthew’s dance scores: The Red Shoes, Lord of the Flies (Manchester Theatre Awards Nominee), The Car Man (Evening Standard Award for Best Musical), Play Without Words (Olivier Award for Best Entertainment), Edward Scissorhands (New York Drama Desk Award: Unique Theatrical Experience) and Dorian Gray.
Original music for TV includes adapting his score for The Car Man and writing the songs for Tipping the Velvet which gained Terry a BAFTA nomination. His mini-opera After Figaro has been filmed. The many TV dramas and documentaries conducted by Terry include Stephen Poliakoff’s Friends and Crocodiles, Gideon’s Daughter, The Lost Prince (Primetime Emmy Award: Outstanding mini-series), Perfect Strangers and Shooting the Past.
