In composing the score for The Cycle of Love, my primary intent was to sonically embody the profound emotional landscape traversed by PK, our protagonist. His arduous journey from India to Sweden in pursuit of love is not merely a physical one but a visceral pilgrimage through human vulnerability and resilience. My goal was to translate his eloquent struggles into a soundscape that feels as tangible and immediate as the road beneath him.

To achieve this, I prioritised as much humanity and rawness in the performances of every instruments as I could. I sought an acoustic reality where imperfections are not flaws to be corrected, but essential textures that reveal the raw truth of the music. There should be a sense of breath, weight, and space in the recording, a feeling that these instruments exist together in a true room, breathing the same air as the characters. This hopefully ensures the score remains deeply personal, capturing the tenderness of the strangers he meets and the experiences which shape PK along the way.

There is an element of roughness and fragility woven throughout the performances, mirroring the weathered, creaking presence of the rusty bicycle itself. Yet alongside this delicacy, there had to be an undercurrent of strength, power, and resilience permeating each note, reflecting the enduring spirit that propels PK forward despite all obstacles.

Musically, I drew inspiration from traditional instruments across the cultures PK encounters, integrating them hopefully without reducing them to cliché in any way. These elements aim to wash over the narrative subtly, evoking place and memory while serving the story’s core themes. Ultimately, the score tries to invite the listener to feel both the weight of the journey and the lightness of the hope that drives PK forward. – Patrick Jonsson
