‘Finding Your Feet’ tells the story of the middle class, judgmental Sandra (Imelda Staunton) who finds her perfect life upended when she discovers her husband has been having an affair with her best friend on the eve of his retirement. Forced to move in to an inner-city council estate with her bohemian sister, Bif (Celia Imrie), she reluctantly finds herself dragged along to a community dance class, where she gradually starts to find her feet, and romance, as she meets her sister’s friends (Timothy Spall, Joanna Lumley and David Heyman).

It was a privilege to work on a project with such a wonderful director and cast. The film deals with themes of loss, finding new identity, and embarking on new love, and I found it very moving. The score needed to be empathetic, subtle and emotional without being melodramatic, and to have the same honesty, depth and warmth that I saw reflected in the everyday struggles of the characters on screen.

Sometimes the musical score for a film needs to drive both the images and the story to their heights, sometimes it needs to be all but invisible. Michael McEvoy’s work does this and much more.
