Evelyn

Following their previous collaborations with releases of ‘The White Helmets (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)’ and ‘Dog Days (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)’, Air-Edel Records is proud to have released Patrick Jonsson’s latest feature documentary score for ‘Evelyn’ in November 2018 across all major digital platforms including iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.

His first soundtrack album since the release of his debut solo studio album ‘Suddenly We Looked Like Giants’, the score sees Patrick reteaming with director Orlando von Einsiedel on an emotional and personal film to the director, telling the story of how a family survives the unthinkable. Fourteen years after the suicide of their son and brother, Evelyn, the family decide to walk the length of the UK and try to talk about him – something they had failed to do in over a decade.

Working on this score was such a privilege and a deeply enriching experience. It was also very challenging as it was the first time (director) Orlando had turned the camera on himself. The personal nature of this film, and the fact that it’s a story so many of us can connect to, made writing music all the more challenging and rewarding at the same time. I’m very thankful to Orlando, producer Joanna, and the rest of the film team for allowing me to be a small part of telling this family’s urgent and moving story.

In terms of the score, I wanted it to feel really intimate and organic. There are two main musical themes throughout the film – one is the ‘family’s journey’ – a hopeful yet grounded theme which underpins both the physical journey they embark on, as well as their emotional journey in opening up. The other theme is for Evelyn – their brother and son – who becomes more and more present as the family begin to embrace the memories of him and try to let him back into their lives. The music aims to mirror this as the theme grows into its full rendition by the end, which within the film is when Evelyn seems most present to each of the characters.                 Patrick Jonsson

As well as Patrick’s evocative score, the release includes an original song “Thousand Miles” by Gwendolen von Einsiedel, Evelyn’s sister.

Walking in memory of our brother Evelyn was an immensely painful but also rewarding experience. He took his own life fourteen years ago and it had left us with a grief we could barely acknowledge. We broke thirteen years of silence on our journey and as we walked, we talked about Evelyn, what happened to him and how we have been affected as a result of his death. Whilst I have been nervous about sharing a deeply personal story with the world, our hope is that the film may just resonate with those who have lost loved ones like this, or know someone who has.

From my own experience of grief and bereavement, I have always found singing very therapeutic. Although we don’t see it in the film, I sang almost every day of our journey. Where I couldn’t find comfort in conversation, singing was always a refuge. I wrote ‘Thousand Miles’ five years after Evelyn died. It is about love, loss and being ready to remember. It was a joy and a privilege to work with Patrick on the song and I felt like we were on the same page from the start. He brought Thousand Miles to life with great care and sensitivity.                      Gwendolen von Einsiedel
