NERIDA TYSON-CHEW is an award-winning Australian film composer. Her ability to write scores across a variety of genres, as well as a reputation for being highly collaborative with Directors, has kept her in demand. Having studied with renowned Hollywood composers including Henry Mancini, Jerry Goldsmith, David Raksin and Bruce Broughton, Nerida is a well-trained classical musician with a thorough understanding of contemporary musical styles and idioms, and easily moves between simple melodies to fully realized, multi-layered orchestral and non-acoustic lines of great complexity.
Most recently Nerida scored the horror film DYING BREED (2008), a score that incorporates layers of electronic music sound design, metamorphosed musical instruments and mutated percussion, combined with modern orchestral techniques. Her score prior, for CACTUS (2007), is also an interesting soundscape departure for a classical musician. Throughout 2007 & 2008, Nerida scored the confronting National Geographic Channel series Taboo (29 x 50 mins), creating original scores of a contemporary style with indigenous ethnicity. In complete contrast, she also scored the playful game show/documentary children's series HOT SPELL.
The TV series BRYAN BROWN'S TWO TWISTED, drew on Nerida's skills to score drama with sensitivity, as well as creating music of suspense, horror, and comedy. Recognised by her peers for her excellence, TWO TWISTED was awarded Best Music For a TV Series at the 2007 APRA-AGSC Screen Music Awards as well as achieving a nomination for Best TV Theme. Every episode had live musicians performing the music contrary to the current trend of electronic-based 'sampler' scores.
The ethnically-charged action music score Nerida composed & produced for the Sony Pictures adventure/horror ANACONDAS - THE HUNT FOR THE BLOOD ORCHID received a nomination for Best Soundtrack Album in the 2005 APRA-AGSC Screen Music Awards. The score, over 78 minutes of music, was written for an 80-piece orchestra and featured renowned ethnomusicologist musicians Riley Lee & Michael Atherton. At the other stylistic extreme are Nerida's fun blues influenced scores for 2 musicians - Hammond organ and upright bass - for the Southern Star hit animation series TRACEY MCBEAN (Series 1, 2 & 3). Her music for this series received nominations for Best Children's Music at the 2005 & 2006 APRA-AGSC Screen Music Awards.
Tyson-Chew's first feature film score for Richard Franklin's HOTEL SORRENTO, released in 1995, earned her an Australian Film Institute nomination for Best Original Score and was awarded Best Music from the Film Critic's Circle of Australia. She also received the award for Best Original Score for a Feature Film from the Australian Guild of Screen Composers. Tyson-Chew's other film credits include MR ACCIDENT, UNDER THE LIGHTHOUSE DANCING, BRILLIANT LIES, VISITORS, ANACONDAS, KICK and the Banff Film Festival awarding-winning wildlife film SILHOUETTES OF THE DESERT. Award-winning scores for TWISTED TALES, HALIFAX FP, EVIL NEVER DIES and THE LOST WORLD are among her television work.
Early in her career, Nerida worked as a composer and orchestrator for the acclaimed Warner Brothers Television series BATMAN - THE ANIMATED SERIES, and for 20th Century Fox, scoring FERN GULLY 2 - THE MAGICAL RESCUE. Her first professional position was Associate Soundtrack Producer for the building of Landmark Entertainment Group's SANRIO PUROLAND THEME PARK IN TAMA, Tokyo. She also worked as an assistant to composer Shirley Walker (TURBULENCE, MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN, FINAL DESTINATION) and for saxophonist David Boruff (whose performances include the themes to LA LAW & ST. ELMO'S FIRE, albums for Anita Baker, Chicago, Whitney Houston, Richard Marx, Madonna, Patti LaBelle and many others.)
Nerida often assists other composers and recording artists, highlights being her associations with Van Dyke Parks and Daniel Johns on Silverchair's album Diorama. She has experience recording in London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Prague, as well as in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.
After studies at the selective Conservatorium High School, Tyson-Chew attended the University of Sydney where she graduated with Honours, Bachelor of Music in Composition. She holds a Master's Degree in Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television as a Harry Warren Scholar from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
True to her background, training and experience, Nerida always is the conductor of her scores and enjoys with a passion being Music Producer for the screen.
