Dirk Brossé was born in Ghent, Belgium in 1960. Initially, it was here and in Brussels that his love of music began, playing the trumpet, double bass and studying the theory of music at the Royal Conservatory. As a conductor he studied in Maastricht and Vienna, going on to gain his Orchestral Accompaniment Diploma at the ‘Musikhochschule’ in Cologne. In 1990, Dirk was a finalist in ‘Iwaki’s International Masterclass’ in Hilversum.
Since then, Dirk has been conducting all major Belgian orchestras on a regular basis and internationally he has appeared as a guest conductor for high profile orchestras, such as:
The London Philharmonic Orchestra; The Elgin Symphony Orchestra of Chicago; The Philharmonic Orchestra of Shanghai; The Volgograd Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia; The Philharmonic Orchestra of Milan; The Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa (Portugal); National Orchestras of Venuzuela, Columbia and Ecuador.
A multifaceted and productive composer, Dirk has composed more than a 100 classical works, which are being performed in over 40 countries.
Dirk’s first symphonic score ‘La Soledad de America Latina’ was written in co-operation with the Nobel Prize winner of literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It was performed at the official opening of the World Exhibition in Seville, 1992. ‘The Landuytcyclus’ was written as a result of the artist Octave Landuyt’s 70th anniversary. It was interpreted by the American soprano, Claron McFadden and recorded during the end of 1997. In his works ‘In Artesia’ and ‘The Birth of Music’, Dirk combined ethnic and classical instruments in a way that is truly unique.
Dirk also writes music for the theatre, including the musical ‘Sacco & Vanzetti’ and has written many symphonic soundtracks for films such as ‘Daens’ by Stijn Coninx (Academy Award nomination, 1993) and the Stijn Coninx film 'Licht (When the Light Comes)' (1998).
Dirk Brossé is now a professor of composition & conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Music, as well as Artistic Director of the symphonic orchestra L’Arco Musicale. In 2002, Dirk was appointed as Musical Director of the Tokyo International Music Festival. He recently wrote a violin concerto, which premiered in Rotterdam in September of 2002, and his ‘Sophia Symfonie’ was performed by Liza Ferschtman.
An ongoing project for Dirk is ‘Tintin - Temple of the Sun'. Dirk composed the music for the show, working with director Frank van Laecke and lyricist Seth Gaaikema. ‘Tintin – Temple of the Sun’ premiered in Antwerp in September 2001 receiving outstanding reviews. The production transferred to Paris and Charleroi in 2002 also receiving fantastic reviews. There are already plans for the production to open in London in 2004/5.
Recently Dirk has become involved with 'The African Children's Choir', acting as Musical Director on a number of concerts and productions. He recently returned from South Africa where he was working with a team of specialists, producing a show for the African Children’s Choir called 'The Prince of Africa'. Dirk has just finished conducting a series of concerts featuring the London Philharmonic Orchestra and is preparing to embark on a ‘Film Music Tour’ of America with the London Symphony Orchestra.
