DAVID RICARD
David Ricard has been very busy. Season 2 of "After Lately" on E!, starring Chelsea Handler, will be re-upping with Ricard's retro, quirky theme song and music cues, which became synonymous with the show in Season 1. Also on the production slate this year is a new "Pink Panther" Christmas special, with original and arranged music by Ricard for ABC Family.
Since relocating to Los Angeles from New York City last year, the composer has scored 26 half hours (76 x 7-minute shorts) of Cartoon Network's animated series, "The Pink Panther & Pals." For the score, David incorporated new arrangements of the original Henry Mancini theme into an exciting score made up of his own distinct themes. The show is a hit on both The Cartoon Network and Boomerang, worldwide. One 7-minute short per half-hour episode is a remake of the classic cartoon, "The Ant & The Aardvark," For "A&A," Ricard goes for a gypsy-jazzy score to keep the mood light and comical. In 2011, Ricard won a KidScreen award for "Best Music" for his work on "The Pink Panther & Pals."
Prior to the "Pink Panther," David scored 65 half-hour episodes of "Maya & Miguel." His ability to showcase his melodic themes and Latin grooves throughout the series earned him an Emmy nomination in the category of "Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction And Composition" in 2006.
Before the move west, David scored 26 half-hour episodes of the international animated series "Super Normal." "Super Normal" follows the misadventures of adolescent superheroes led by Eric Normal, who, incidentally, has no super powers. The score and theme song are a combination of 60s surf and spy music, mixed with classic cartoon bombast (think Dick Dale meets Carl Stalling). The underscore, also influenced by film noir and 70s crime TV, keep the laughs rolling and the action alive.
Along with scoring TV projects, Ricard stays busy, writing compositions and arrangements for his 18-piece swing ensemble, the David Ricard Big Band. The DRBB-featuring L.A.'s top session musicians and Verve recording artist Lucy Woodward- is part Basie swagger, part Wonka whimsy and dares audiences to keep up.
David is also a frequent contributor to Sound On Sound Magazine, his editorials and reviews feature cutting-edge tools for music composition and production.
Ricard is a prolific composer for media whose music can be heard on hundreds of network and cable TV shows. Additionally, he has composed recent jingles for clients such as Priceline.com, Flonase, Cookie Crisp and Panasonic. Ricard also produced the latest incarnation of the classic jingle "Thank you for coming to Loews " for the cinema giant's centennial celebration.
David cut his music-for-picture teeth while re-scoring dozens of seasons of MTV's "Real World" and "Road Rules" for syndicated broadcast. While composing and producing roughly 50 "sound-alike" cues each week, he developed an ear for detail and the ability to produce work at an alarming rate.
Though Ricard is versed in all film music genres, the work that gets him most recognized is that which showcases his wit and irreverence. Drawing on his childhood as a self-proclaimed TV junkie and son of a MAD Magazine cartoonist, Ricard uses his arsenal of pop culture references and his upbringing steeped in comedy to his advantage. www.davidricard.com
